The question

Is PB2 Ultra Processed?

It depends on the product. Of the 13 PB2 products we score, none are Level 4 (ultra-processed) and 6 are Level 1.

Powdered peanut butter removes most of the natural fat from peanuts by mechanical pressing, then adds sugar and salt. The ingredient list is short, and the defatting step is a real change from whole peanuts.

Key findings

  • 1PB2 uses mechanical defatting rather than chemical processing; the peanuts themselves are not chemically altered
  • 2The added sugar in standard PB2 typically accounts for the second-largest ingredient by weight after peanuts
  • 3Sugar-free and pure PB2 variants exist and score lower on processing than the original

What goes into PB2 products?

PB2 is made by pressing roasted peanuts to remove about 85% of their natural oil, then grinding the remaining solids into a powder. The removed fats are sold separately. The final product contains peanuts, sugar, and salt, making it a three-ingredient food. The processing classification reflects the mechanical separation of fat from the whole food, which alters the natural nutrient ratio and removes the fat-soluble nutrients that would normally accompany peanut consumption. By comparison, natural peanut butter made from only peanuts and salt is less processed, while many commercial peanut butters with added oils and sweeteners are more processed.

How to read a PB2 label

  1. 1

PB2 ingredient list typically reads: roasted peanuts, sugar, salt

  2. 2

Check the sugar-free PB2 variant which uses monk fruit extract instead of sugar

  3. 3

Reconstituted PB2 has roughly 85% less fat and 70% fewer calories than regular peanut butter

  4. 4

Whole peanuts or simple peanut butter (peanuts + salt) are minimally processed alternatives

Frequently asked questions

Is PB2 ultra-processed?

PB2 has a short ingredient list (peanuts, sugar, salt), though the mechanical defatting places it above minimally processed foods like whole peanuts. Of the 13 PB2 products we score, none are Level 4 (ultra-processed) and 6 are Level 1.

What is PB2 made of?

PB2 is made from roasted peanuts that have had most of their oil pressed out, then ground into a powder. Standard PB2 also contains sugar and salt. The sugar-free variant substitutes monk fruit extract.

Is PB2 healthier than regular peanut butter?

From a processing standpoint, simple natural peanut butter (peanuts and salt) skips the defatting step and the added sugar, so it is less processed than PB2. However, PB2 has significantly less fat and fewer calories per serving. The better choice depends on individual dietary goals, not processing level alone.
