How These Tools Work

Processing Score Methodology

Base Score Assignment
Starting score based on total ingredient count, from 1.0 (single ingredient) to 7.0+ (21+ ingredients)
Processing Penalties
Additional points for artificial colors (+2.0), artificial flavors (+2.0), HFCS (+1.5), preservatives (+0.6-1.5)
Final Classification
Level 1 (≤2.5), Level 2 (2.6-5.0), Level 3 (5.1-8.0), Level 4 (>8.0)

Nutrition Score Methodology

Positive Factors
Points added for protein (+3), dietary fiber (+2), fermented dairy (+1)
Negative Factors
Points subtracted for added sugars (-3), sodium (-2), saturated fat (-2), trans fat (-1.5)
Final Rating
Scale 0-10 (higher is better): Poor (0-2.9), Fair (3-4.9), Good (5-6.9), Excellent (7+)
