Scores typically range from 1.0 (whole foods) to 30+ (highly industrial products). Database average is 8.2.

Based on the internationally recognized NOVA food classification system that categorizes foods by their degree of processing.

Calculation Method

Base score from ingredient count plus penalties for industrial processing indicators like artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives.

How Processing Scores Are Calculated

Step 1: Base Score

1 ingredient:1.0 points
2-3 ingredients:1.5 points
4-10 ingredients:3.5 points
11-20 ingredients:5.0 points
21+ ingredients:7.0+ points

Step 2: Processing Penalties

Artificial colors:+2.0 each
Artificial flavors:+2.0 each
HFCS:+1.5
Preservatives:+0.6-1.5
Natural flavors:+0.3
